3033165 Pte Ernest Thomas Greenwood, was born on November 18th, 1879, in Hackney, London, England. His parents were George and Charlotte (nee Partridge) and he was the youngest of 5 boys and 2 girls.


Ernest emigrated to Maywood, Cook County, Illinois, Mass, USA, in the early 1900's, followed by his sister Charlotte, her husband and family. In August, 1913, Ernest married Janie M MacDonald at Melrose Park, Cook County, Illinois.


When the call came in 1914, Ernest signed up and was assigned to the the 1st Bn, 1st C.O.R. and was subsequently transferred into the 4th CMR on August 12th, 1918.


One of 239 men of the 1st C.O.R. transferred in 1918, sadly Ernest died with the 4th CMR in an attack on Monchy-le-Preux, Passchendaele, on August 28th, taking a hit from an enemy machine bullet after an advance of 200 yards on their objective.


Ernest lies at rest in the Orange Hill Cemetery, Feuchy, France.
