Pte. Charles Elmore Sheppard (seated) was born in December 1895 in Toronto.
Prior to the War, Charles served in the Governor General's Body Guard, which became part of the 4CMR in November 1914.
Awarded an MM (Military Medal) in June 1916, the citation reads:
"Under very heavy artillery fire, this signaller left his dugout in Trench and showed conspicuous bravery in repairing a telephone which had been destroyed by enemy fire. He voluntarily left his trench and proceeded into the open, remaining there at a point particularly exposed to and under very heavy fire until he had completely re-established telephone communication."
This photograph shows Charles (seated) in Paris after he had received his Military Medal. With him (standing) is "very good pal" Clarke Emmonds.
After the War, Charles married and had 3 sons. He passed away relatively young, in 1952.
Thanks and credit for the biography and photograph go to grandson, Graham Sheppard.
